VLESS: connecting where VPNs are blocked

Most people should use WireGuard. It is faster, the app is simpler, and it works everywhere that does not actively block VPNs.

VLESS is for the places that do. China, Iran, Russia and a handful of others inspect traffic and block anything that looks like a VPN. WireGuard looks like a VPN. VLESS does not — it is carried over an ordinary HTTPS connection to what appears to be an unrelated website, which is why it gets through.

It is slower, and it needs a different app. That is the trade.

Do this before you travel

Set it up while you still have unrestricted internet. The app stores are often unreachable from inside the countries where you need this, and so are the websites you would download the app from. Arriving without it installed is the most common way people end up stuck.

1. Install the app (below). 2. Get your VLESS link from your account — choose VLESS as the protocol. 3. Add it to the app and connect once, to confirm it works. 4. Keep a copy of the link somewhere you can reach without the internet.

The app

There is no Veystrix app. These are the established VLESS clients:

• Android — v2rayNG (Play Store or GitHub) or Hiddify. v2rayNG is the common choice.
• iPhone / iPad — Shadowrocket (paid, App Store) or Streisand (free). Note that these are

often removed from the Chinese App Store, which is another reason to install before you go.

• Windows — Hiddify or v2rayN.
• Mac — Hiddify or V2Box.
• Linux — Hiddify, or xray-core from the command line.

Hiddify is the easiest if you want one app across several devices, and it takes the same link on all of them.

Adding your link

Your configuration is a single line that starts vless://. Copy it from your account — pick VLESS, choose a location, then Copy link.

v2rayNG: the + in the top right, then Import config from clipboard. The profile appears in the list. Tap it, then the round connect button at the bottom.

Hiddify: the +, then Add from clipboard. Then the large connect button.

Shadowrocket: copy the link and open the app — it offers to add it automatically. If not, the + in the top right, then paste.

Desktop Hiddify or v2rayN: there is an *Import from clipboard* option in the main menu or under a +.

Check it worked

Open veystrix.net/tools/ip. It should show you coming through our network, in the country you picked.

If the page will not load at all, the connection is not working — see below.

Which location to pick

There are four VLESS locations: Singapore, Tokyo, Berlin and Los Angeles. From most of Asia, Singapore or Tokyo will be markedly faster. There is no UK VLESS server, because the demand for this protocol is not in the UK.

Expect it to be slower than WireGuard. It is carrying your traffic inside an ordinary-looking HTTPS connection, and that costs something. It is the price of getting through at all.

If it does not connect

Try a different location. Blocking is often per-server rather than blanket, and switching from Singapore to Tokyo is the fastest thing to try.

Get a fresh link. Generate a new configuration from your account. The server details change occasionally as blocked addresses are replaced.

Check the date and time on your device. This protocol is sensitive to clock drift, and a phone an hour out will fail to connect with no useful error.

Turn WireGuard off first. Two VPNs at once do not work, and on a phone the system usually allows only one.

A word about the law

A small number of countries restrict or ban VPN use. That is worth knowing before you travel rather than after — see are VPNs legal. We provide the tool; the rules where you are standing are yours to check, and we would rather say that plainly than leave it unsaid.

Treat the link like a password

It grants access to your VPN account. Do not post it, do not put it in a shared document, and get a fresh one from your account if you think it has been seen.
